Exploring the intricate realm of thin molecular films, consisting of single-molecule magnets or quantum bits, plays a pivotal role in the advancement of cutting-edge electronic and magnetic devices. The behaviour of these films on surfaces remains a largely unexplored area, presenting a unique opportunity for scientific exploration.

This high school project will harness the capabilities of an existing high-vacuum chamber in our EPR laboratory designed for the thermal sublimation of thin films composed of coordination compounds of transition metals, mainly Co (II). The journey will traverse the entire spectrum, from transforming a bulk, as-synthesized microcrystalline powder to a meticulously nanostructured thin films.

The ultimate objective of this endeavour will be to establish a pathway toward predicting and evaluating the magnetic properties of these thin films. To achieve this, the project will leverage a state-of-the-art EPR laboratory and CEITEC Nano facility.  Upon project completion, students will develop a versatile skill set, gaining hands-on experience in synthesizing nanostructured thin films, enhancing proficiency in advanced instrumentation for precise data analysis, and cultivating interdisciplinary understanding in chemistry, physics, and materials science. The project will sharpen critical thinking and problem-solving through experimental challenges, emphasizing effective scientific communication. Additionally, it will instill research ethics and safety, preparing students for responsible scientific inquiry and equipping them for future endeavours.
